A Weekend in Carmel Valley
Our corner of Monterey County trades fog for golden light. Here is how we would spend two slow days.
The village
Carmel Valley Village is small on purpose. Tasting rooms, Bernardus among them, sit beside galleries and unhurried restaurants, and everything worth doing is done slowly: a long lunch, a flight of local wine, a browse through whatever the galleries have hung this month.
The river and the land
The Carmel River threads through the valley floor, and the hills above it are laced with trails. Garland Ranch Regional Park is the local favorite for a morning walk before the day warms. Afternoons belong to the water, a book, and nowhere to be.
The coast, when you want it
Part of the valley’s charm is what it is near. Carmel-by-the-Sea and its white-sand beach, the coves of Point Lobos, the Monterey Bay Aquarium, and the Big Sur drive past Bixby Bridge are all easy outings. Then you climb back into the sunshine while the coast fogs over.
The evenings
Valley nights are for the fire pit and a sky full of stars. Pour something from the village, stay out late, sleep with the windows open.
